In March, VILAF invited law students attending law school in Ho Chi Minh City to compete in its first legal article writing contest. This is the inaugural year for this annual contest sponsored by one of Vietnam’s largest and most prestigious law firms.
The contest was open to all law students who had completed at least one year of law school prior to the end date of the competition, which was 30 May 2017.
VILAF sponsored this event to give law students an opportunity to advance their legal writing skills, while affording them the chance to receive a cash award of up to VND10 million for 1stplace and reduced cash awards for 2nd and 3rd place winners. The top three winning students were also invited to attend a special awards luncheon, where the winners were announced and given their awards and cash prizes.
The winners were selected from dozens of contest entries submitted by local law students in response to this year’s timely topic on environmental pollution. Responding to recent environmental incidents, students were asked to research and comment on the sufficiency and enforceability of Vietnam’s environmental laws and regulations in order to prevent and penalize corporate environmental polluters in Vietnam. Legal articles were judged not only on their legal analysis, but also on their creativity, logical reasoning, spelling, grammar and citation.
VILAF chairperson, Ms. Vo Ha Duyen, presented the awards to the winners as follows:
First Prize: Le Nguyen Mien Thao – Ho Chi Minh City University of Law
Second Prize: Hoang Le Minh Thu – Ho Chi Minh City University of Law
Third Prize: Duong Nguyen Tri Thanh – Ho Chi Minh City University of Law
